I am searching for reading material, and I want something disturbing. What I love the most is psychological horror - something that really shows the darkest aspects of the human psyche.

Well my list of the top 3 most disturbing books I've read (Well none of them are horror, but I hope you'll recommend me some:) ) :
1 Mysterious Skin - Well it's a romance novel about a pedophile. I don't need to say more. Not horror, but equally disturbing, and interesting on a psychological level. There was a cool movie made about this book to
2 We need to talk about Kevin - Again there is a movie made about this novel. It's about the experiences of a mother who's kid shut down half of the school
3 How Jonny got his gun - It's a lovely book about a blind-deaf, quad amputee-veteran and his internal experiences in a infirmary.

Would house of leaves count since the house sort of feeds off of and reflects the mind of the people inhabiting it?

Number one would have to be House of Leaves.
2.) Haunted, by Chuck Palahnuik. Beware the first chapter, it's known to make people faint.
3) One Foot Wrong.
4) The Orange Eats Creeps.
5) Wrong Things, by Poppy Z. Brite. This one is actually out of print, and there were only like 1,000 or so copies anyway.
6) anything by H.P. Lovecraft.

Probably "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. It's not horror, but it should be.

I read Fifty Shades of Gray, if it was purposely written as a thriller it would have been awesome. But as it is, it's simply horrifying that it did as well as it should.

Eli Wiesel's Night is probably the most disturbing that I've ever read. War crimes and atrocities disturb me in a way that nothing else can, because they're both evil, and so colossal in scale that they're literally unimaginable.

When it comes to fictional books, Johnny Got His Gun definitely seems pretty disturbing, but I've never gotten the chance to read it.

So I've been reading creepypasta for awhile now, and it is not scaring me as much as it used to (I used to be terrified of it). Out of all the horror you have read (it doesn't just have to be creepypasta), what has scared you the most?

My top Three are:

1) "Go Ask Alice" (a girl's journal who is on LSD in the 60/70s)
-Anonymous

2) "Cut" (a girl who has an addiction to cutting and is sent to a treatment center)
-by Patricia McCormick

3) "Crank" (a mother's collection of poems describing her daughter's addiction to meth)
-by Ellen Hopkins

They are all a psychological trip...

I amend my previous statement and replace it with Twain's "The Mysterious Stranger".

'The Shining' seems like an obvious choice but if you disassociate the book (Which is much better) from the film, it really is one of the most terrifying, distressing, and saddening dredgings of the damaged psyche you will come across. In the book, the Jack Torrance character is a sympathetic character who fights his demons until the very end, unlike the Jack Nicholson 'pantomime' character.

The short story called "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson has stayed with me my entire life.

Whispers by Stephen King.

"HE IS BACK Hilary Thomas knew terror as a child, but never anything like this.

HE IS BACK He is hunting her with a sick desire more terrifying than hatred could ever be. And he is in her house again.

HE IS BACK He is on the stairs and he can’t be stopped. Hilary killed him once and he keeps coming back. Again and again.

HE IS BACK He is at her bedroom door."

That instantly drove me to buy the book, and I wasn't disappointed. The ending is kinda lacking, though, but that creepy antagonist that doesn't seem to be stopped like Nemesis in Resident Evil is really, really disturbing.

I dunno, Wintergirls was pretty intense. It was super melodramatic and everything but there was just something about it.

The End of Alice by A.M. Homes (I believe) - It's the story of an imprisoned pedophile who is corresponding with a 19-year-old girl pedophile whom he falls in love with while she fills him in on her conquest of an 8-year-old suburban boy. The ending is one of the most graphic, vile, and disturbing things I have ever read, imagery wise. My girlfriend recommended it to me a couple of weeks ago and I devoured it in two days.

Also, the works of Harlan Ellison, while hard to acquire from anywhere other than Amazon or your girlfriend's dead aunt's secret attic compartment, are eminently thrilling. He's a great short story writer. My favorite one is called "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream". (Warning: reading this story may cause you to smash your computer into little, indefinable bits.)

It by Stephen King. Haven't finished it yet, 200 pages to go. Very long, absolutely terrifying.

It is a book that I had tried to finish reading several times since fourth grade and never could until earlier just this Summer. I'm only going to put in one spoiler about it that isn't technically a spoiler since the book could have done just fine without it but is what I find to be the most horrifying part of it:

Spoiler:
All of the little kids in the story have a gang-bang in the tunnels under Derry before it all goes ka-blooey.

When I read that, all I could think for the next five minutes was, "Holy ****..."
