I love horror movies and though I may not be as versed in the macabre as some, I have noticed you have to sit through ten rotten ones to find a single good one. So, what is the best and worst horror movie you have ever seen??
What movie made you truly afraid and what film made want to not live on this planet anymore??

One of the best horror movies I have seen is the 1978 remake of Invasion of the body snatchers. I think it is one of the best remakes hollywood has ever made and it is a genuinely terrifying concept, how many films make the simple act of going to sleep scary??
Worst horror movie has to go to Night of the Lepus, I would love to have been a fly on the wall when this pitch was made. For those of you who may not know, Night of the lepus is a movie about giant killer rabbits. The worst part about the film is that they don't use any special effect to make a scary looking rabbit, they just filmed normal bunnies in slow motion.

Worst: The Last Man (2008)
Best: Dead Silence (2007)

The Last Man is the worst due to its obvious lack of quality: picture and acting-wise (to the point that you laugh at it for its sheer poorness when you are supposed to get scared). Some low-budget movies do awesome job despite their lack of money, like Pontypool and Blair Witch Project.

Dead Silence uses old-school formula that I think they used pretty well. I liked the script, but the lead actor seemed a little dull at times. I didn't see the ending that was obvious to most people, and that kinda blew me away. For me, it was the best twist in all humanity. It uses cliche elements and does it well in spite of not-so-famous actors and not-so-high budget. Its uncut version is so much better. Still the best for me. Critics give it too much of a low score. The audience gave it quite positive reviews. Much like Hannibal series on NBC.

One of my favorite horror movies is Alice, Sweet Alice. It's an older movie about a young girl in the Catholic church who may or may not be a serial killer.

My least favorite scary movie of all time is Hostel. In my mind it's the movie that capitalized the most on the torture-porn boom that went on after Saw. Nothing scary or suspenseful about it, just shock value gore. So lame! It gives horror films a bad name.

Ravenous is a fairly obscure horror film that focuses on the Wendigo concept, and is one of my favorites. Still, I have to agree with critics who say the first half is better than the second. That first half is sublime horror. The latter half veers into more formulaic territory, but is still enjoyable. And the soundtrack is amazing throughout. I like Guy Pearce but Robert Carlyle steals the show. Plus it's got a very dark sense of humor that never detracts from the horror. Check it out!

Picking a least favorite horror flick is more difficult. Now that it's been mentioned though, I also dislike the torture horror genre. The first Saw was good. And I admit there's something about them that appeals to a morbid, recessed part of the psyche. But I'd rather not watch continual suffering being inflicted upon innocent, helpless victims. I dunno. It's not simply about the gore. Ravenous also happens to be extremely bloody. But the violence is only a direct result of a greater horror. In torture porn, it's a means unto itself. I suppose that's a certain kind of scary, the thought of being in a situation like that, it's just not my bag. They leave me feeling dirty. Eck.

There was another thread about this recently.

Anyways, the films of Kiyoshi Kurosawa represent some of the finest horror I've ever experienced, and his movies Retribution and Pulse have had a strong influence on my writing. Check them out.

Also good: Audition, The Shining, Noroi, Ringu, Three... Extremes, The Inkeepers, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, House of the Devil, The Pact

Enjoy.

All the stories I read the introduction. It leads me to conclude that this is really good.
