Scouring one of the many sporking websites I stumbled across a link that leads to a site that tells you the reading level of your word salads. It should be interesting.

Check 'em!

I would put The Origin of Christman through this, but it's not a conventional story and I'd likely get all sorts of fucky results.

Here's the stats for 'Someone Has Night Terrors'.

I put 'Winter Warning' in earlier and got like 7th-9th grade and was quite pleased and I wanted to see how they compare. I always try to write my Fairfield stuff as simplisticly and straight-forward as I can so this makes sense.

If you got to the site and enter something each thing has links that explains it.

Essentially the main ones at the top (i.e. Flesch-Kincaid grades) give you the breakdown for American reading grades in schools based on difficulty, ability to comprehend etc.

So if you're getting like 4.3 - 5.1 then students in grade 4 and 5 are more suited to the story based on it's difficulty.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: 9.2 grade
ARI (Automated Readability Index): 11.5 grade
Coleman-Liau 11.0 grade
Flesch Reading Ease: 66.0/100 (plain English)
Gunning fog index: 12.5 grade
Laesbarhedsindex (LIX) Formula: 45.1 = school year 8
SMOG Index: 11.1 grade
Average grade level: 11.1 (mean of above grade levels)

So basically it judges how complicated your writing is?

William Faulkner, speaking of Ernest Hemingway: ‘He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary.’

And Hemingway’s response: ‘Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?’

These tests say nothing.

They test readability, and never claim to be doing any more.

Also Hemingway was a hack.

Charles Dickens.

To be fair, he was a hack for a reason. He was paid per word, so he wrote a lot of words. I don't really blame him for that one.
