It's all survival horror for me. (Does that make me a survival *****?)

Eternal Darkness. Being the Lovecraft fan I am, this game was destined to be my favorite. Plus, the insanity effects. Oh, it's sooo good. Needs a sequel yesterday.

Silent Hill 1, 2, 3. Psychological masterpieces. That radio static... For whatever reason I lost interest partway into SH4: The Room, and couldn't bring myself to finish it. Seems to have gone downhill from there.

Resident Evil 1 and 2 (and REmake). Classics. They hold a special place in my heart as my true initiations into the genre.

Alone in the Dark (original). Again, love the craft through which the Lovecraft influence shines. The granddaddy of them all.

The Call of Cthulhu game is damn good. Bethesda put it out at the same time as Morrowind, so it has the same creepy, RPG atmosphere. Really difficult though-- I never got to beat it.

Amnesia, Dead Rising and Resident Evil 4 are the only the other survival horror games I've really gotten to play, although I'd love to try ClockTower and Silent Hill.

Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth must be what blackmail was talking about. I couldn't beat it not because it was hard(it is, but that wasn't the reason). It was bugged in that ship part, and I still well remember why it's one of the few horror games I tried but couldn't finish. I haven't finished Silent Hill 3 despite playing 1, 2 and 4, but in terms of atmosphere, they were very brilliant, especially in their era. Resident Evil 4 was a good shock for me after playing the first three games because it was frustrating at first but totally worth it. RE5 was somewhat more of action compared to 4, and 6, despite mixed reviews, is like a horror action movie that needs your interaction. Couldn't expect RE to stay in its awesome roots forever, but that's that.

The games I stated are all my favorites, but the best would probably be Resident Evil 2. Despite the dated graphics, I still can't seem to get over its overall appeal, considering how old it is. Didn't rely solely on jumpscares, but the fact that you can't kill everything even in normal mode, its camera angles that f*cking "Mr. X" was somehow scarier than Nemesis. It gave you a more real kind of horror, and it sticks to me for that very reason.

Nice pick with Carnevil! That was always my favorite arcade game.

The Castlevania series is my favorite.

I have also always been a big fan of Resident Evil. I'm playing 6 now and have been surprised at how creepy and unnerving it has been. It has the overblown action element of recent entries in the franchise but is just so intense it's scary.

All that said Zombi U was probably the scariest game I've ever played. I don't know what it was exactly, maybe just how weak and helpless you are as a character, but that game scared the **** out of me like no other ever has.

I think Leon's scenario in 6 is still scary albeit lacking compared to the old ones but do you think that 6 is scarier than its predecessors? It's refreshing to see someone actually not bitching about 6 lacking scares in the majority of the game. You guys made me want to play CarnEvil btw.

I love the Condemned series (Well... Condemned Criminal Origins more than Bloodshot.) because I enjoy the somewhat realistic, worn down environments of a what I observed as a dying city. Not to mention the outlandish factors of hunting down a serial killer that seems to be more than your common criminal. Which, the forensic elements are pretty awesome too.

It's a good possibility! I too have played Call of Cthulhu recently...and ragequitted when I locked myself in a corner essentially with not enough things to fix my wrecked leg.

I actually stumbled onto this game back when I was a poor kid and had no idea that there was an entire genre in videogames dedicated to horror. At that point, I was about twelve or thirteen and had already steeped myself in horror literature, but I picked it up on a whim and was completely blown away. That, coupled with a weird anthology movie, the name of which I can't remember to this day, is what initially got me interested in Mr. H.P.

Also, I'm just going to ***** about this because I was very close to donating money to the new Eternal Darkness that the developers of the old game had been working on and they just shut down again. They may get the ball rolling once more but, as it stands, a sequel is very far down the road (given it ever DOES get enough funding).

I don't understand how people don't remember the sheer genius of the game. It baffles me that this wasn't crowdfunded within a matter of weeks.

I go on Giant Bomb and occasionally (when the paywall is down 'course) Something Awful. A lot of the complaints seemed to be about how one of the dudes leading the project I think was behind Too Human, and would be managing the funds for it. Doesn't help that an artist got arrested for child porn.

Yeah, I heard talk about the whole cp thing. A lot of people decided to boycott the game after that, actually, as I remember. It didn't affect my opinion of the rest of the development team, though. It shouldn't have for anyone, really. It's perfectly plausible that there was one sicko among them who liked looking at little peters (and I'm not talking about saints who have returned from the dead and been accidentally turned into microscopic specks with Rick Moranis's shrink ray).

I think it was just a souring experience for most people, as around the time it wasn't made clear if the dude's work would still be used I think. Not 100%. Still, it sucks the project didn't go through as the first Eternal Darkness was fun and I've wanted another game like it.
