Dickens and Hemingway have inverse problems. Hemingway was a technically masterful writer who was too anal about sentence structure to pound out a worthwhile story. Dickens was pretty crap at writing great from a viewpoint of actual quality, but he wove some awesome yarns.

Basis for this opinion, please?

Have you read better?

Or - more appropriately - could you do any better?

That's not a fair question and you know it, Scotty. A reader doesn't have to prove they can write better than an author just to have a negative opinion about that author.

Hemingway was responsible for such classics as ME AND MY FRIENDS GO ON VACATION, and I FUCKING LOVE THIS WOMAN'S HAIR. Forgive me for thinking he lacked a spark in his storytelling.

You're right, you're right. I redact the whole 'could you do better' question.

I am mildly miffed. Ches is fully entitled to his opinion and that's fair enough but Hemmingway (who I am not, personally, a great fan of) was known as a 'life writer' and wrote based on experience and understanding of the world. Ches is 18, lives in his basement and hates everybody and he's calling Hemmingway - one of the most celebrated modern writers in the world - a hack. That isn't right.

What we also forget about Dickens, and we do this with Shakespeare, is that he wrote in a manner that was outstanding for the time. He was above his period in terms of literarure and I'm not talking about the WAY he wrote, I'm talking about the stories he told.

To be fair, when I called him an outright hack, I was doing so to elicit a reaction. I understand his technical expertise, but feel that him writing about his life wasn't the best subject material. Also, he kind of proved that you can overdo how technical you make your writing, most of his stuff feels incredibly sterile to me. You can pretty much feel the way he went over everything with a fine toothed comb wringing what might have contributed to a better voice on his part. Again, just my opinion.

Although, I guess somehow me living in a basement means I don't know an interesting story from an uninteresting one.

Can you give me an overly-technical Hemmingway quote for reference?

I think the little watermark on the right really makes that picture great.
