Except, I mean, there actually is an in-film explanation for their behavior. It's silly and cursory just like everything else in the film, but it's there.

In any case, I wouldn't have put this here, since it isn't really a horror movie. It's definitely overrated, as anything that gets any amount of attention tends to be, but that doesn't have much to do with where it actually sits qualitywise. Never saw it as anything more than a wonderfully scripted little love/hate letter to the genre, clever and silly and fun in all regards. There's no malicious intent or pretentious tone to it, I'd find it pretty hard to hate even if I hadn't enjoyed it.

Really? I found it very self-hating and pretentious, considering that the movie's message is basically that the entire horror genre, all of its creators and all of its fans should just go away/die.

Again, if it were self hating it'd be much more pointed and malicious. As it stands, while it might not have a message, it's presented as a fun "what if" on multiple levels, almost built around the humorous image of the mundane looking office workers muttering about overtime and placing their usual side bets as they unleash horrific evil on unsuspecting victims.

Like I said, it's overrated in that people think it's a groundbreaking or deep film. It's just fun, well executed silliness.

I guess you could see it that way, but I thought there was a pretty clear subtext of "the people who make and watch these movies are sick and evil and deserve to die."

I agree that there was definitely a subtext that those who watch horror want their horror a certain way and if they don't get it, they throw a tantrum.

Spoiler:
This was reflected in the actions of the dark god things that destroy the world at the end of the film.

However, as Ches pointed out, there was a whole in-universe reason for all the dumb decisions that were made and the whole thing seemed played as a parody / deconstruction of the genre, like they say. Was it overhyped and overrated? Absolutely. But it was a fun movie either way, I think.

Spoiler:
Though the really dumb decision I saw was actually on the part of the organizers themselves. Haven't seen this pointed out before now, but why the hell would you put an "release all" button in a room anybody could get to? Naturally, they aren't expecting any of the sacrifices to find that room like those two did, but still common sense should tell you not to have that sort of thing in the first place. I mean, what good would it do in any other circumstance? It was a plot-heavy prop, but eh, that's nitpicking, I guess.

I saw the system release button as a joke in an of itself, a little poke at the "Why does this evil lair have a self destruct button" question that pervades so much pulpy media. Not really fitting considering the level and tone of satire the rest of the movie used, but it led to the best sequence in the movie so I was willing to overlook it.

Another key miss in the movie for me was when they showed all the cubes sliding around.

That was so clearly CGI - it really took me out of the movie. It might as well have cut to toontown or something.

I don't know how I feel about the Evil Dead remake (not talking about Evil Dead 2).

On one hand, it's definitely not like the original. Different circumstances, different atmosphere, different overall tone. Not the horror movie with "maybe accidental, maybe intentional" comedic camp to it. Totally more straight-up horror and wince injuries.

On the other hand, I didn't hate it. It doesn't stand on its own enough to count as its own thing except with the same title, as it includes way too many references to the original, but it's a different enough creature (pun intended) that it doesn't really make me go "They ruined it all!" There were other things I wasn't happy with, but that goes into spoiler territory and I don't feel like explaining.

All in all, I'm confused as to how I feel about it. But I don't hate it.

Has anyone watched Pontypool? For a low-budget movie I think it has arguably the best atmosphere and feel.

So, The Tall Man. To clear the things up, the film has second to no relation to you know what character.
Spoiler:
In fact, all the elements that can be connected to slendy are just a red herring.

This film is similar to the same director's Martyrs, which I didn't like, although this film is kinda better. It has no torture porn, but one of its main twists is somewhat similar to the one used in that movie. Overall, I'd call this film a twist porn, seeing how much it sacrifices the plot and characters' consistency to the OMG WHUT A TWIST effect.

Overall, the film is not bad, and its first half is pretty tense. What ruins it for me is a really questionable message it seems to propagate.

Update: Angel Heart is a good movie. It's actually quite a good movie if you like noir, horror and *** and violence.

I agree, I think it's a well thought out follow-up, and a significant improvement on the original.

I recently watched Sinister. The writing and the characters are a bit iffy, but the visuals are IMO really effective, love all the "home movie" bits, and there's a lot of nice visual stuff. Overall I thought it was a pretty good effort.

Have none of you seen Frayed?
It has a very gruesome scene in it, and the rest of the movie is kinda bogged down with visual mindfuckery, but if you sit and actually watch it its a very satisfying horror movie.

Any of you guys seen the movie "American Mary"? I'm usually with a high horror tolerance but I found myself pale and sick after seeing 2 characters here.
